PrairiesCan – Regional Defence Investment Initiative (RDII)
Also known as: PrairiesCan RDII
A $379.2 million, three-year federal initiative (delivered by PrairiesCan in the Prairies) helping SMEs integrate into Canada's defence supply chains, including dual-use businesses pivoting toward defence-related work. Contributions to incorporated businesses are normally repayable, covering up to 75% of eligible project costs. Applications accepted until December 31, 2027, or until funding is fully committed; all projects must be completed by March 31, 2028.
Funding-amount and repayment-term facts re-confirmed 2026-08-26 on the program's /information.html sub-page (not this entry's sourceUrl, so not covered by the automated drift check): "RDII contribution funding for businesses is normally: repayable... up to 75% of eligible project costs... at least 25% of project costs should be covered by non-PrairiesCan funding." The 2-years-operating hard-gate fact, and the confirmed absence of any employee-count ceiling, are from a separate sub-page, /eligibility.html (also re-confirmed 2026-08-26): "have been in operation for at least 2 years" is the only tenure/size criterion listed for incorporated businesses. Launch news release (2025-12-05): "PrairiesCan launches new initiative to help SMEs across the Prairies meet Canada's defence and security needs" — https://www.canada.ca/en/prairies-economic-development/news/2025/12/prairiescan-launches-new-initiative-to-help-smes-across-the-prairies-meet-canadas-defence-and-security-needs.html. Not to be confused with prairies_can_rtri (RTRI) — a separate, concurrently-running PrairiesCan initiative for tariff-impacted businesses generally. Intake deadline 2027-12-31 — submit before this date.
Who qualifies
- ⚠️ HARD GATE: incorporated business operating in the Prairie provinces for at least 2 years
- Business within, or positioning itself in, the defence supply chain (including dual-use technologies/products/services with a demonstrable military component)
- No stated numeric employee-count ceiling — confirmed absent from the official eligibility page, not merely unresearched, so this is deliberately NOT hard-gated on employee count (unlike prairies_can_rtri)
- Contribution funding for businesses is normally repayable, covering up to 75% of eligible project costs, with at least 25% from non-PrairiesCan sources
- Not-for-profits supporting the defence ecosystem (research centres, business accelerators, etc.) are also eligible, on separate terms
Typical applicant
Incorporated Manitoba manufacturer or tech business (2+ years operating) positioning itself to supply or already supplying Canada's defence sector, including dual-use civilian technology with a demonstrable military application
