New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) – Community-Based

Federal grants from ESDC for community-based projects that involve seniors and promote their social participation, voluntary service, and inclusion. Projects must be led by or actively involve seniors in their design and delivery. Eligible projects include community gardens with seniors programming, intergenerational spaces, recreation, skill-sharing, and social inclusion activities. 2026-27 cycle: grants up to $50,000 per project (raised from $25,000; capital expenditures capped at $25,000 within that).
2026-27 call window: June 2 – July 14, 2026 (3:00pm EDT) — maximum raised to $50,000 this cycle. Non-profit applicant required; for-profit or personal applicants are NOT eligible directly. Land can be held personally if a land-use agreement exists with the non-profit applicant. Deadline independently re-confirmed verbatim 2026-07-10 (4 days before close) given the time-sensitivity. Intake closed 2026-07-14 — next intake date not yet announced. Confirm current status directly with the program.
Who qualifies
- Eligible applicants: non-profit organizations, public sector bodies, First Nations, municipalities — NOT individuals or for-profit corporations
- Project must actively involve seniors (55+) as participants, volunteers, or beneficiaries
- Grant amount: up to $50,000 per project, up to 1 year duration (capital assistance capped at $25,000)
- 2026-27 call window: June 2 – July 14, 2026 (3:00pm EDT close)
- Community garden with dedicated seniors space and programming qualifies strongly
- Seniors must be meaningfully involved in project design (not just recipients)
- Land must be secured (owned or long-term lease/license) before applying
- Personal land owners can participate IF a non-profit organization is the applicant and a formal land-use agreement exists
