Host It Downtown Event Grant (Downtown Winnipeg BIZ)
Also known as: Host It Downtown Event Grant
Grant from Downtown Winnipeg BIZ (a Business Improvement Zone association funded by a mandatory levy on properties in its zone — not a government department) supporting new, relocated, or expanded PUBLIC events held within the Downtown Winnipeg Business Improvement Zone. Three funding tiers: Small (up to $1,000), Medium ($1,001–$5,000), Large ($5,001–$10,000).
Downtown Winnipeg BIZ is a Business Improvement Zone association, not a government department — classified jurisdiction: "private" so this is never presented to a client as government funding (same convention as telus_standwithowners/cibc_biz_pitch). Three deadlines were published for the 2026 program cycle (below); the guidelines PDF is dated Feb 2026 and titled for the 2026 program year specifically, so a same-shape 2027 cycle is likely but NOT confirmed — re-verify before advising a client past 2026. ⚠️ As of this verification (2026-08-01), ALL THREE published 2026 windows have already lapsed (Jan 1–Apr 30 events needed submission ≥3 weeks before the event; the Mar 15 deadline for May–Sep events and the Jul 29 deadline for Sep–Dec events have both passed) — there is no confirmed currently-open intake. Confirm current cycle status directly with events@downtownwinnipegbiz.com before advising a client.
Who qualifies
- ⚠️ GEOGRAPHIC GATE: the EVENT itself must take place within the Downtown Winnipeg Business Improvement Zone — this is about where the event happens, not the applicant's business address or registration
- Eligible applicant types are broad: non-profit organizations, Downtown Winnipeg BIZ member businesses, businesses located OUTSIDE the BIZ zone, and individuals may all apply if their event meets the criteria
- Event must be open to the public
- Event must have more than one funding source — this grant cannot be an event's sole funding
- Scored preferences (not hard requirements): shoulder/winter-season events (Oct 1 – Apr 30), brand-new events downtown, Downtown Winnipeg BIZ member applicants, events celebrating Indigenous culture/artists, free-to-attend events, organizers with a demonstrated record of success
- Ineligible events: outside the BIZ zone; online/digital events; private/non-public events (meetings, wedding socials, personal fundraisers, conventions, professional conferences, trade shows); regularly scheduled sporting events; regularly scheduled theatre shows; regularly scheduled live music/DJ sets in a standard venue/bar/club; political or cause-based demonstrations/rallies/marches
- Application requires a high-level event plan (max 2 pages: dates, times, locations, programming) and an event budget (revenue projections, other funding sources, donations, anticipated expenses)
Typical applicant
An event organizer (business, non-profit, or individual) planning a new, relocated, or expanded PUBLIC event specifically within Winnipeg's downtown BIZ zone. Not a general Manitoba small-business fit — the event's physical location is the real gate, not the applicant's industry, size, or registration.
